Vigan Cityhood - Vigan as a Municipality then and Vigan as a City now.
Vigan is the capital city of Ilocos Sur, and it is one of the most historical and cultural places in the Philippines. Because of its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, Vigan has always been a site of heritage and tourism. Before becoming a city, Vigan grew as a municipality where trades, politics, and the arts thrived for people of the Ilocos region. Moreober, Vigan was a booming local economy sustained from agriculture, weaving, and small enterprises while it was a municipality.
Cityhood marked a key event in Vigan's history. It officially became a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 8988, in 2001. Vigan's being a city then gives it more access to resources, infrastructure, and public service enhancement. The conversion of Vigan into a city opened many opportunities for the advancement of tourism, education, and business development. This strategy brought progress while protecting tradition, which propelled Vigan to international recognition. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders Cities in 2014.
In fact, Vigan today has grown into a thriving city that nurtures modernity while keeping its history intact. The economy has grown, attracting many tourists and investors while harboring its rich heritage. Vigan is now not a municipality but a city. The change allowed it to flourish without having to let go of its cultural roots. Development and preservation at the same time can still make Vigan a proud bearer of its colonial past and the hope for the Philippines in the future.
