Elpidio Quirino: His Early Life, Political Journey, and Notable Achievements




Elpidio Quirino is the sixth President of the Philippines, he was born on November 16, 1890, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, to a poor family. Despite poverty, he strongly pursued his education. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1915. Resilience and hard work early in life would characterize him later in his presidency. He was first a teacher and a law clerk before he qualified for the bar, preparing him for his legal and political career.


Quirino started his public life as a representative of Ilocos Sur in 1919 and became a senator in 1925. It was during the Commonwealth period when his political career took off as he served as Secretary of Finance and Secretary of the Interior. He was the vice president under President Manuel Roxas, and after Roxas died in 1948, he succeeded to the presidency. He prioritized post-war recovery and rebuilding of the economy, infrastructures, and government institutions during his presidency. He also advocated for social justice through the launching of programs for addressing poverty and land reform.


His most notable accomplishments included the establishment of the Central Bank of the Philippines in 1949, which progresses the economy , and agricultural development and housing projects for the poor. Quirino also supported Philippine foreign policy and fostered closer relations with the United States and Asian solidarity through SEATO. Despite the criticisms of corruption alleged against him, his regime set the foundation for economic and social development, which ensured a legacy of a leader to rebuild a war-torn nation.
