National Children’s Month
The theme for the celebration of the 2024 National Children's Month was "Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines." The urgency of dealing with these systemic and societal problems to ensure the safety and protection of children calls for this theme. The fight to eliminate all forms of violence committed against children should be the goal of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. It calls on families, schools, communities, and government agencies to provide conditions for children that are nurturing, safe, and without fear of or from any form of harm.
Indeed, one insight into the celebration of this year lies in its emphasis on interrupting the cycle of violence by addressing some root causes such as poverty, inequalities, and lack of education. This will empower the children, inform them of their rights, and give them avenues to report abuse freely. It further requires greater implementation of the "Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act" and other measures that facilitate child-friendly schools and environments in communities. All of this can be strengthened through government-private sector-civil society collaboration, with the necessary resources channeled towards programs that will give utmost priority to children's well-being.
The celebration also reminds us of healing and resilience. In addition to preventing violence, the theme calls for the building of a culture of care and support for children who have suffered from trauma. Mental health services, counseling, and rehabilitation programs are necessary for young survivors to regain confidence and hope. Through this theme, we open doors for a safer and more inclusive Philippines, where every child can grow and contribute to a brighter future for the nation.
